Tablets and smartphones have become increasingly popular in all walks of life, so it’s perhaps inevitable that boaters would find a use for them on board their boats. That’s why we’ve done our research to bring you the most helpful and best boating apps that are out there. They’re certain to improve your boating experience!

1. Navionics Boating UK & Holland

Navionics has been around for years and it’s probably one of the most popular boating apps — and for good reason. It includes basic navigation functions, vector cartography, wind forecasts, terrain overlays, panoramic pictures, tide and current data, and even a ‘community layer’ with constantly updated information provided by users.

Plus, if you have a compatible chartplotter aboard it’ll sync with your phone or tablet to put the latest cartographic updates right onto your plotter. You can even download geo-referenced boating and fishing articles or cruising guides, at any time.

It’s an expensive download at £32.99 but with all these features in the palm of your hand, it’s very arguably worth every penny!

2. Windfinder

Ideal for sailors, kitesurfers, windsurfers and more, this app allows you to see the wind, waves, and weather across the globe in real time – which allows you to find where the ideal weather conditions are for your sport. The best part? It’s completely free to download!

3. Animated Knots

Knowing your knots is a given before stepping onto your boat – the only issue being that there’s so many to learn and remember. Luckily – as with most things – there’s an app for that. Animated Knots by Grog is a teaching and reference tool for boaters and other hobbyists. With step-by-step instructions and – as the name suggests – frame-by-frame animations, this app teaches you to tie knots at your own pace.

At £4.99 it’s great value for the hundreds of knots it can teach you! That way you can focus on having a good time on the water, rather than tying yourself up in knots!

4. Boating Suite: Complete Boating Log Book

This app allows tracking and reporting of time and expenses while on your boat. No more keeping logs by hand and sifting through receipts at the end of the trip. It includes a log book, fuel log, expense log, to-do list and even a shopping list!

We don’t know about you, but paying £4.99 so you can spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time captaining your boat, seems like great value for money!

5. Camera App

Last but by no means least on our list of boating apps, make sure you use your camera app to document all of your boating adventures and share them with us on Facebook and Twitter. Hold your phone tightly though – you don’t want it going overboard!
